Nothing sounds more bizarre to me than a "McDonald's Barista" but according to recent news, you'll soon be able to order lattes and cappuccino along with your Quarter Pounders and Chicken McNuggets. Mmmmmmmm....
The ambitious plan calls for the installation of specialty coffee bars in every one of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants this year. The move is an attempt to steal more fire from struggling Starbucks and is projected to add $1 billion to McDonald's annual sales. Sheesh!
Their goal is to get people to come in, relax, surf on the wifi and enjoy the whole McDonald's "experience" even longer. I'm skeptical, but have an open mind. If they can successfully replicate the Starbucks experience and quality of product while at the same time bring the prices down closer to McD's levels, I could see it catching on big time. Plus, give them credit... their coffee isn't bad now where it used to REALLY suck.
On the other hand, I do recall the last time they tried jumping entering a new category on this grand of a scale...
