Moncton man named top commercial photographer

Louise Vessey of Charlottetown and Moncton's David Corkum took home the top prizes at the 2007 Professional Photographers of Canada Atlantic awards banquet yesterday at the Delta Brunswick hotel. Vessey was named portrait photographer of the year, while Corkum was named top commercial photographer during the marquee ceremony of the Atlantic group's annual convention.

"We were very pleased with the quality of the entries this year," said image competition chairman Ron Ward of Moncton. "Once again, photographers in the Atlantic region embraced the competition and produced some excellent work."

Ward said there were 170 entries from more than 50 photographers.

Other major award winners included Mary Ellen Nealis of Fredericton (best portrait), Dale Preston of Moncton (best press photograph), Johanna Matthews of Truro (specialist of the year), H. Bruce Berry of Truro (best general print), Greg Adey of Holland College in Charlottetown (student photographer of the year) and John Ratchford of Sydney, N.S., (best wedding album).

New Brunswick photographers earning top awards by category included Corkum (best illustration), Preston (best press photo), Tim Pfinder of Saint John (best animal photo), Nealis (best child portrait), Michel Duquenne of Campbellton (best figure study), John Beesley of Rothesay (best wedding portrait), Susanne Hovey of Hampton (best wedding group photo), Sylvie Robichaud of Ste-Anne-de-Kent (best photojournalistic wedding photo) and Paula Lirette of Shediac (best wedding album).
