World Press Photo of the Year

Canadian photographer Finbarr O'Reilly beat out over 83,000 others and won the coveted 2005 World Press Photo of the Year Award - a feat which is the photojournalists equivalent to winning an Oscar. O'Reilly, a native of Vancouver, captured this hauntingly beautiful picture on August 1st 2005 at an emergency feeding clinic in the famine and drought ravaged country of Niger. For some reason, this picture sticks with me. It makes me want to hug my kids. Photo jury chair James Colton said it best... "This image has everything: beauty, horror and despair. It is simple, elegant and moving."
