1969 Saul Bass Pitch Video for Bell System Logo Redesign

This blows my mind at so many levels... It was a branding pitch video originally shown to Bell executives. At the time, it was the largest rebranding project ever undertaken in U.S. history.

Look at the work that went into this. The thinking behind it is timeless. Heck, this presentation could be given today and most of the insights would still apply. We think we're so much smarter today, but we're not. This is over 40 years old and everything they said and did are the things today's "experts" are still learning.

The best part of this video is that we also know that pretty much everything Bass said ended up being right. Through his work, that symbol achieved an over 93% recognition rate among Americans. I would argue that it would likely still be very high even today despite not having been used in over 25 years when Bell became AT&T in 1984 (launching another iconic Bass design in the famous original "Death Star" AT&T logo).

Saul Bass has always been my all time branding idol. This only reinforces that.

Leo Burnett's famous speech animated...

If you're in the business, you've likely heard or read this famous speech before. It's a good one. Check out how the Portuguese animation company Lobo has given new life to it and presented in a fantastic new way... I think Leo would approve.

Here's the transcript of the whole speech:

This speech was delivered by Leo Burnett at a meeting of the entire Chicago Burnett office on December 1, 1967.

'When to take my name off the door'

"Somewhere along the line, after I’m finally off the premises, you – or your successors – may want to take my name off the premises, too.

You may want to call yourselves " Twain, Rogers, Sawyer and Finn, Inc."….. or "Ajax Advertising" or something.

That will certainly be OK with me – if it’s good for you.

But let me tell you when I might demand that you take my name off the door.
That will be the day when you spend more time trying to make money and less time making advertising – our kind of advertising.

When you forget that the sheer fun of ad making and the lift you get out of it – the creative climate of the place – should be as important as money to the very special breed of writers and artists and business professionals who compose this company of ours – and make it tick.

When you lose that restless feeling that nothing you do is ever quite good enough.

When you stoop to convenient expediency and rationalize yourselves into acts of opportunism – for the sake of a fast buck.

When you show the slightest sign of crudeness, inappropriateness or smart –aleckness – and you lose that subtle sense of the fitness of things.

When your main interest becomes a matter of size just to be big - rather that good, hard, wonderful work.

When your outlook narrows down to the number of windows – from zero to five – in the walls of your office.

When you lose your humility and become big-short wisenheimers…. a little bit too big for your boots.

When you start believing that, in the interest of efficiency, a creative spirit and the urge to create can be delegated and administrated, and forget that they can only be nurtured, stimulated, and inspired.

When you start giving lip service to this being a "creative agency" and stop really being one.

Finally, when you lose your respect for the lonely man – the man at his typewriter or his drawing board or behind his camera or just scribbling notes with one of our big pencils – or working all night on a media plan. When you forget that the lonely man – and thank God for him – has made the agency we now have – possible. When you forget he’s the man who, because he is reaching harder, sometimes actually gets hold of for a moment - one of those hot, unreachable stars.

THAT, boys and girls, is when I shall insist you take my name off the door. And by golly, it will be taken off the door. Even if have to materialize long enough some night to rub it out myself - on every one of our floors. And before I DE-materialize again, I will paint out that star-reaching symbol too. And burn all the stationary. Perhaps tear up a few ads in passing.

And throw every god-damned apple down the elevator shafts.

You just won’t know the place, the next morning.

Flying Lotus: Kill Your Co-Workers

This video has an odd quality that is strangely compelling...

What's really cool about this project is that Mike Winkelmann, the creator, has put out an open invitation to 3D animators to make new scenes and stories with the parade of fantastical characters featured in the video. All the source 3D models have been made freely available for download and use by anyone.

Mike explains:

"When the video is released I will also be posting all of the 3D animation project files on my website so that people can see exactly how each shot and every character was animated. They are also free to use these 3D models and scenes in any way they'd like. I like to think of it as sort of an "open source video" in that all of the pieces of the project are also released for people to do what they'd like with."

This presentation from Fountain Valley, CA puts Clark Griswold to shame...

Taking over 48 days to complete, it will surprise you to learn that with all those lights, the whole system only draws a maximum of 24 Amps running on 120v AC (2880 watts). Essentially, the same amount of power to run a hair dryer and a vacuum cleaner together.

As cool as that was, I think it still pales in comparison to last year's over-the-top Christmas light champions from Murrieta, CA where they wired together 13 houses on the same street...

Nobody's immune to breast cancer.

When we talk about breast cancer, there's no women or superwomen. Everybody has to do the self-examination monthly. Fight with us against the enemy and, when in doubt, talk with your doctor.

This has to be a campaign conceived by boys, but in fairness there are more girl comic book fans today than ever before. Nevertheless, it's getting attention which is always the ultimate goal.

Art project measures the mood of German town

Fühlometer (Feel-o-meter) is an interactive art installation that shows the mood of a city by displaying it in the form of a giant Smiley on the lighthouse. The system reads emotions out of random people's faces from cameras installed along the lake. The faces are analyzed by sophisticated software (contributed by the Fraunhofer Institut) and rated either happy, sad or indifferent.

The obtained mood data is then stored on a server and processed in real-time and visualized by the smiley

The system has been developed as joint project by the artists Julius von Bismarck, Benjamin Maus, and Richard Wilhelmer.

This could be one of the most incredible and ambitious stop-motion videos I've ever seen. No CGI and no Green Screen were used. All shots were meticulously created in camera with nothing but Jelly Bellies and artist Kina Grannis. All of it took 1,357 hours over 22 months!

Random Fact:
Jelly Belly jelly beans at retail usually sell for around $9/lb. It takes about 400 Jelly Belly Beans to make a pound - So 288,000 would be about 720 lbs. costing around $6,480.00.

Back in 2007, I blogged about the CN Tower being dethroned as the tallest freestanding structure by the then still unfinished Burj Dubai (Now called the Burj Khalifa).

Since then, a few other skyscrapers have popped up that have also surpassed that mark, but by 2013, the height of the CN tower will be beaten by almost DOUBLE.

Two building are in the works that will stretch over 1 kilometre into the sky... The Nakheel Harbour and Tower in Dubai, and the 1.23 billion dollar Kingdom Tower in Jeddah.

Just to put that in perspective for us Maritimers, that's 1,000 metres to our 127 metre Bell Aliant Tower (formerly NBTel tower) in Moncton - our tallest structure.

Another way to look at it is front the top of the Bell Aliant Tower, the people look like ants. From the top of the Kingdom Tower, the Bell Aliant Tower looks like an ant. Crazy.

"Abandoned" ... A moving little short film on the plight of farmers

Not too long ago, I posted the first video (and song) from the The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation where Willie Nelson covered Coldplay over a wonderful little animated short emphasizing the importance of developing a sustainable food system.

In Chipotle's latest commissioned project; "Abandoned", they speak to the economic hardships family farms face in today's over-industrialized agriculture system.

The film tells a story of three boys that break into an old farmhouse that was clearly abandoned in a hurry. As they explore the house, and even begin to vandalize it, one boy slowly comes to realize that the family that once lived there was not so different from his own.

On the soundtrack, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs beautifully covers Willie Nelson's "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys."

After recently watching the eye-opening documentary "Food Inc." and seeing the plight of farmers first hand in my immediate family, this video truly had an impact on me.

What's cool about this timelapse by Moscow photographer Sasha Aleksandrov is that he did it entirely by hand with no camera track or steadicams. He moved his tripod a few feet each shot, repeated the move 50 times, then stabilized the footage on the computer.

Not only is the video itself very interesting, but the new paint job on the old Cold War era factory is great looking.

The project, lead by Jason Anello with the help of designer Kelli Anderson, plans to hand out free, artisanally-made popsicles to the energy (and popsicle) consuming public.

With any luck, the combination of sugar, facts, and the threat-of-humanity’s-self-inflicted-demise-owing-to-dirty-energy will be persuasive enough to get some people off the grid.
